The protected area occupies the central part of the Khamar-Daban mountain range, stretching in the latitudinal direction along the southern coast of Lake Baikal.
The reserve has developed 22 ecological routes of different length and difficulty level. They are suitable both for active travelers, and for lovers of a quiet and contemplative rest. There you will find all the variety of Baikal natural landscapes: taiga cedar forest, bog raised, highland tundra and alpine meadows. Immediately after the central manor, sightseeing and hiking trails with a total length of 93.6 km start. For the convenience of the passage, wooden bridges, dikes, and suspended crossings were built here. On the territory of the Baikal State Natural Biosphere Reserve 1113 species of higher vascular plants (ferns) grow, 14of them are included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation and 48 – in the Red Book of the Republic of Buryatia.
10 endemic species (plants that grow only in this area) grow there, including the endemic of the Khamar-Daban ridge – Baikal vermionia. That’s a very beautiful plant from the gentian family with dark-violet flowers, that could be found mainly in high-mountain meadows.
The reserve is home to more than 360 species of animals, 293 species of birds, 2 species of reptiles, 2 species of amphibians. Ichthyofauna (a collection of fish species) of the reserve is represented by 17 species.
Among all the bird species found on the territory of the Baikal State Natural Biosphere Reserve and its protected zone, 20 bird species are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, 64 species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Buryatia.
Among mammals, 1 species is listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation and 5 species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Buryatia. One species of amphibians is listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Buryatia. Among the ichthyofauna, 2 species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Buryatia – lenok and taimen.
